Iran’s ‘Sunless Shadows’ selected to open IDFA

Iran’s ‘Sunless Shadows’ is to open the 32 Int'l Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Iran’s ‘Sunless Shadows’ has been selected to open the 32 edition of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) in the Netherlands.

‘Sunless Shadows’ was named as the IDFA 2019 Opening Film. The film’s participation in the Dutch event marks its first international appearance.

The documentary narrates the story of five young women who are jailed in a small juvenile detention center for murder.

Through breathtaking monologues, the women clarify the circumstances of the murders and even their motives.

The IDFA “offers an independent and inspiring meeting place for audiences and professionals to see a diverse and high-quality program,” the festival’s website reads.

“The diverse nature of the event applies to the form and content of the films as well as to the cultural backgrounds of the filmmakers. IDFA offers an alternative to mass entertainment and uniformity, confirming that there is an increasing need in audiences for high-quality films that delve deep and urge us to reflect.”

The 32nd edition of the IDFA will take place on November 20–December 1, 2019.
